A pivotal confrontation between British and the American troops in the early stages of Revolutionary War, the Battle of Great Bridge occurred eight months following Lexington and Concord, on December 9, 1775. Victory by patriots in the marshland setting forced the British Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, and his forces to evacuate. It also enabled the Virginia Convention to forcefully make its first ever public declaration of independence only four days later.

A popular historic destination, the battlefield is known for its annual two-day reenactment, which attracts participants in authentic garb and visitors from across the country. A recent initiative of the foundation has been the creation of a visitor’s center, constructed in the style of the Colonial era.
